I would like to recommend a database option for abandoned Bento users, which I started using after seeing one of Don McAllister’s screencasts about it. It is called TapForms and there are Mac, iPad, and iPhone versions. It is not very expensive, when I bought it, all three combined cost less than Bento for the Mac alone, so it is certainly far less expensive than moving to FileMaker. It is not as pretty as Bento in terms of colors, themes, fonts, etc. but it is more powerful (relational) while still being easy to use. It syncs between the devices. My database needs are pretty simple, so I was able to move my Bento data over as CSV files, but there is also a menu item for importing Bento templates. It is updated frequently (it added Fleksy keyboard support, for example). Here is a link http://www.tapforms.com/
I haven’t found anything short of Filemaker to replace Bento, so I will keep using Bento for now. (TapForms currently doesn’t handle the graphics.) I think Elaine is right, the form aspect helps you focus. I have multiple dbs in Bento, from what varieties of plants & veges are in my yard to an inventory of all my embroidery software patterns. I can focus on just the jpgs w/ titles, & easily select the designs (or plants) I want details on. Something that would be very tedious in a spreadsheet. Sure hope someone steps in with a better replacement.
